DIMES Melanin Show
As a member of the DIMES student fashion organization, I created garments for our Spring 2017 Melanin Show. My section's theme was Afropunk, so I created two looks: a watercolor mesh kimono and a pink marble-print jumpsuit. While the watercolor mesh was premade, I hand-dyed the fabric for the jumpsuit using marble paints and a surface of carrageenan powder blended with gallons of water.
Look 1: Watercolor Mesh Kimono
As a designer in the DIMES student fashion organization, I created garments for the Spring 2017 Melanin Show. My category was Afropunk festival wear.
For an easy, comfortable, and bold festival look, I created a kimono for my model Chance that we paired with denim shorts, a tank top, and boots. The fabric is a mesh with a watercolor pattern.
Look 2: Pink Marble Jumpsuit
For the show's finale piece, I drafted a flare-leg jumpsuit for my model Kierra, with minimalist, natural styling.
Dyeing the Jumpsuit
I hand-dyed the jumpsuit using pink, black, and white paints that were swirled together on a liquid that created the appearance of marble without causing the pigments to mix together. This required marbling paint, a mixture of carrageenan powder and water, a frame.
